Aspiring wine geek seeks knowledge. Any ideas for wine classes, courses etc. in Southern California would be greatly appreciated. I have a devent grip on the basics, but would like to learn more.

I am going to the United States next month and will be taking a bottle of wine to gift a close family friend. I would like to attach a message with the gift. What should I say?
I switched to Ubuntu from Vista and I kinda miss Pinnacle Studio. I can try installing it in Wine but I want to use opensource software. Something as similar as possible to Pinnacle Studio please and will run in Wine or Ubuntu.
OK I’ll email you.
It’s hot and wast lot of time to shop in supermarket to get what I want of quality food and wine. I’m wondering if I can shop online and they also can delivery my staff to my home would be great! I’m living in Shanghai, China.
I collect a small amount of wine. Currently I have about 60 bottles. I started collecting Opus One and a lesser-known Bordeaux by Rothschild with the 1998 vintages. Yesterday, I bought three bottles of a 2005 Concha y Toro Don Melchor Cabernet for about each, and three bottles the 2005 Opus One for about 0 each. The Don Melchor was rated by Wine Enthusiast at 96 while the Opus One has a 95 depending on which magazine rated it.
The ratings have been similar for these wines. Here’s what I’ve been able to find for both:
2004 both were rated at 94
2002 DM was 93 OO was 94
2001 DM was 94 OO was 89
2000 DM was 95 OO was 89
I know the 89s for the Opus is not a good representation of it’s true quality. Both tend to come in around the mid 90s.
Also, Don Melchor came in as the fourth best wine in 2006 according to Wine Spectator .
So, why does the Opus One get so much attention when you can get what appears to be just as good a wine for much less money? I know the name is a part of it, but why wouldn’t Don Melchor end up with as good a name after years of great wine?
I guess my question is, I’m I missing something? Is there something other than name and points that make Opus worth more?
I need to get ahold of one of those holiday gift baskets for one of my clients. I cant send away for it…as I need to drop it off at 6 30 am tomorrow. Does anyone know of a good store to get this?
Thanks
Mark
I love Greek or French oil cured olives. These are the strong flavored olives that are wrinkled and black.
Does anyone have a suggestion for the best wine and cheese to serve with these olives? I am looking for general categories of wine, although brands are okay too.
Thanks for helping the wine ignorant!
I’m actually doing research for a class project on Virginia Wines. I just need to know if wines from VA actually have anything special to offer people who usually drink wines from more well known areas, like California or Italy. Is there something done in Virginia that makes it different from other wines made elsewhere? Is there a brand from VA that could stand up against wines from more popular areas? Or are VA wines in a class of their own? Any feedback would be helpful
:-). Also, if anyone has free time to fill out a survey please let me know.
I have an Republic of Ireland based online business and I sell wine and food I import to from Italy. I pay excise duty to bring the wine into the ROI and I can ship it to ROI addresses no problem. But what if I got orders from the UK? How should I deal with customs? And how about the US?
