Why do people answer question that they don’t know?
As someone who has a large wine collection (1200+ bottles), my recommendation is to store ALL of your wine in WINE REFRIGERATOR!
Wine is optimally stored in 50’s F. White wines prefer low 50’s, while red wine is OK in high 50’s. However, there is a major misconception of storing and serving your red in "room temperature". If you are in northern Europe, where the temperature runs in 50’s to 60’s, then it is OK to store and serve your red wine in room temperature. When you are elsewhere (ie like I am in Texas, where it is 90’s in summer), you DO NOT store your wine or serve your wine in room temperature. It is nasty to drink a wine that is in mid 80’s degree.
Heat will destroy wine over time. If you keep it out in the summer months, your wine will be destroyed over time. Few days is OK if it is not over 90, but few months will not be. One of my friends stored a Dom Perignon in pantry for years to age, only for it to be ruined at that special "occasion". Not good.
My suggestion is to store your wine in a wine refrigerator. If you have enough money to join a wine club, you have enough money to buy a $200-300 wine refrigerator of 30-40 capacities. If you want more, a 100 bottles capacity wine fridge generally runs $600-800. Buy one. If your wine is $30-40 per bottle and you have 30 bottles, that is $1000 investment you just made. It is not worth for that money to be wasted because you have no adequate storage.
As for regular refrigerator, a few days is OK. However, longer than that, the cork will shrivel up due to dehydration, and that will cause the wine to oxidize and be destroyed. Not good.
Other storage ideas includes renting a wine storage facility as well as building a wine cellar in your house. If you are serous about wine collection, a cellar is easy to build - I built my own in 2 months time and you can easily convert a pantry or small closet to a cellar with build-your-own-cellar-kit (www.iwawine.com). Please store your wine properly. It is ashame to ruin good wines due to improper storage.
only white wine and blush wine go in the fridge…
red is served room temp.
nope…
you chill whites before you drink em… you do not need to chill wine to store it and you do not chill reds.
No need to store any wine in the refrigerator. Just chill a bottle or carafe as you are getting ready to use it. Normally red wine is drunk at room temperature, to bring out the full body of it, but nobody is going to string you up by the thumbs if you happen to like your red wine chilled, so suit yourself, and down the hatch lol.
It’s your wine; do as you please.
I store burgandy in the fridge.
NO NO NO! Red wine should always be stored in a (preferebly dark) room temp place, like your cubbard in a kitchen or den. NEVER refigerate it. If it has not been opened, get yourself a wine rack and lay it on it’s side on in a wine rack…
good luck!
I do because I live in the desert. Hot weather is not good for wine. Hot meaning 90 degrees & up.
It is better to store it at room temperature or if it is hot where you are, in a cool place.
NOOOOOOOOO….It will ruin the quality and the flavor. If you don’t finish the bottle, recork it and leave it on the counter.
Whites in the fridge. Reds at room temp. And never store opened wine - the taste changes and it’ll be ruined.
Red stays out. Only white and blush go in the fridge.
We drink chilled merlot all the time. Even $50 bottles we chill IF we are not having guests. We like it cold and it is crisp and refreshing. However, other answerers are correct when they say this is not the traditional way to serve red wine and it would be bad form with guests. Generally, wine does not need to be chilled at all (red or white) until just before you drink it. However, if you are specifically speaking of wine that has already been opened, then yes, you need to pop it in the fridge, then let it come up to room temp to drink (following convention). A recorked bottle of wine will be good for about a week. It isn’t poison or spoiled after then, just the flavor will be not so good. Shortly later you have a good cooking wine, then shortly after that, a nice salad vinegar. If you are recorking, store the bottle upright in the fridge, to lessen the surface area that is exposed to oxygen. The best scenario is to get one of those corks at the wine store that allows you to pump a little compressed nitrogen into the bottle, but this gadget is a little expensive.
You don’t have to unless it’s very warm where you are.Putting it in the fridge will cause it no harm but if you want to drink it at room temperature take it out an hour before serving.
No.
You can keep it in your house, but out of direct sunlight. Fridging it alters the flavor and taste
No. The best place to store red wine is in a basement, if you have one. If not, consider moving. Red wine should be kept cool but not chilled. You can buy wine coolers but they are very pricey and usually hold only a few bottles. My basement is always cooler than the rest of the house. I keep 20 to 30 cases all the time. I’ve always been pleased.
If you don’t have a basement and can’t afford a cooler, just find the coolest place in your house and store the bottles on their side.
