Do you tip when you go wine tasting?
My boyfriend and I went wine tasting this weekend; it wasn’t one those tours where they show you around the vineyard. Basically you go up to the front counter and the girl behind the counter gave us 5 different types of wines to try and told us a bit about them.
When we walked out the door, my boyfriend and I looked at each other and were like "Were we supposed to tip her?"
This was our first time doing any sort of wine tasting.
Does anyone know the proper etiquette? We had a great time and plan on going again soon.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Tipping was introduced as means of paying directly for services rendered. The idea was to encourage good service. You are supposed to tip any individual that works under such an arrangement. (Where they provide direct service to you and part of their pay is expected to come from tips). In this case you do not tip a professional sales person behind the wine tasting bar. They have an entirely different arrangement. They get paid salary plus commission for any wine they sell.
Tipping at a wine tasting is not required. The winery gives these samples hoping you will buy and reccomend their wine to others.
You should–if she served you, (even if it was free,) a tip is always appreciated. (And 15%-20% if you paid.)
As a general rule, I think you should tip EVERYONE and ANYONE who you think deserves it. And if you really question whether it is "proper" in a specific circumstance or not then just ask the individual.

I have been to several wine tastings and i have never known it to be a custom to tip your server. The person giving you the wine is trying to get you to purchase a bottle. They are not serving you in order to get a buck or two. If you like the wine, buy a bottle. If you don’t care for the wine than you don’t need to feel obligated to buy one. Just be polite and appreciative.
