Going down to Texas Wine Country….?
My girlfriends and I want to go down to Texas Wine Country for a weekend in the spring. Have any of you been there? What would be the best time to go (beat the heat) and where to stay? We want a comfy, cute, affordable and relaxing place to stay. Maybe a cabin we can rent together? Thank you!

I represent the Texas Dept of Agriculture Wine Marketing Program — there are several wine trails throughout the state. Here are the predominant wine trails with web links to get more information.
1. Texas Hill Country Wine Trails, the largest with nearly 25 wineries (www.TexasWineTrail.com), located in Central Texas
2. Way Out Wineries Road Trips (www.WayOutWineries.org), with 8 wineries located in North Central Texas
3. Munson Wine Trail (www.munsonwinetrail.com), with 12 wineries located in North Texas
4. Grapevine Wine Trail (www.grapevinewinetrail.com), with 9 wineries located in Grapevine/North Texas
5. Texas Bluebonnet Wine Trail (www.texasbluebonnetwinetrail.com) with 8 wineries in Southeast Texas
6. Fredericksburg Wine Road 290 (www.WineRoad290.com), with 7 wineries in the Hill Country
7. CrossTimbers Wine Trail (www.crosstimberswinetrail.com), with 9 wineries in North Central Texas
To find a home or cabin to rent, try http://www.HomeAway.com.
Another great site to check out is http://www.FredTexFlavors.com — it lists wineries, restaurants, cafes, etc. in the Fredericksburg area, and also has a link for lodging.

Hope this helps.

I wouldn’t really call it "wine country." I would refer to it as the hill country. I would search for things in Fredericksburg. There are tons of cute shops and such.
Avoid it in July, August and September. It will be nasty hot around then. If you go in late April or early May you run the chance of nasty storms.
Well the problem is that Texas isn’t the coolest of places (in terms of weather, that is). It’s my understanding that the wine season generally starts in late summer (when Texas heat is at its highest point). But the wineries should be open almost year-round. The best times to avoid extreme heat are late October to the end of November (maybe even into December), or starting in early February through about March.
