WINE has its limitations and by no means will run all proprietary applications. WINE offers a windows compatability layer and should only be used if no native Linux alternatives are available. That said here is a list of windows applications that will run using WINE http://appdb.winehq.org/
Here also is the Official Ubuntu WINE Documentation

LUg.
WINE is very buggy at best. It has come a long way, but it still has a long way to go and since the main financial contributor has gone out of business it probably won't see great improvement until another company steps up. What program are you trying to install chances are there is a Linux alternative that is usually better.
Try finding an alternative linux program. Windows programs don't work on linux.
Another (although much larger) way of running windows software in ubuntu or any operating system is to install sun virtualbox and host a windows machine within ubuntu.
You can even setup seamless mode so that the applications will run within ubuntu with very good compatibility.
This method will take up more space than wine and the file systems will be separate from each other.
