Most labels these days are self adhesive and will not come off just by oaking, but need heat treatment to soften the glue -- see http://www.winelabels.org/remove.htm for various options

You soak the bottle in a HOT Water/soapy solution with a cap or two of bleach, to remove the glue in a sink full of water..
Get a sharp knife and loosen the edges, I let it soak till the water is cold and most times it just slides right off.

Soak in hot water with a bit of vinegar. It may take as long as 24 hours. Just add more hot water from time to time.

Gently blot the label dry when it come off, allow to air dry until just damp and press it in a book (use a phone book, not your good encyclopedia.)

Save in a scrapbook.

I am not sure what Martha did. But, you can let the bottle soak in a tub of water. It will eventually slide off. If you want to keep the label in a more pristine condition, then you might hold it over steam. But, that takes more time and effort.

Both have worked for me.

If the bottle is empty, fill it with very hot water to above the label line....this will loosen the glue, and the label will slide off. Slide a razor under the back label to test if it's ready. then you can try the front. If it start tearing, stop and peel from other end.
