Even if you tried to look like a novice in Long Island you have much competition, eh?
Dress comfortably, closed shoes bring a jumper in case it gets cold. Bring some fancy water, perhaps a crust of bread. As long as you’re at that bring salami. And Gorgonzola.
Some wineries take you on a tour; after the first two or three they seem to look the same after a while. Some wineries just have a tasting room, which is really a buying room - they’d love to sell you a few cases. Don’t buy much paraphernalia because they’re usually overpriced.
If you’re drinking very much stay in a local hotel/motel, the fuzz make a great living off of ‘tasters’!
.
Me and my Mom went to a winery many years ago. First they took us on a tour of the winery then we got to sample the wine. Most of our group wore tennis shoes. No open toed shoes. The part where they showed us where they stored the barrels was very damp.
Wine tastings are very casual. I vacationed in the Fingerlakes near you, and there are tons of wineries up there. Hundreds! Just go, bring a few bucks to tip and have fun. They usually have crackers to cleanse your palate.
Feel free to tell them you’ve never been to a tasting before. They will probably be more thorough in their explanations. These people are passionate about wine and grapes, so ask questions. Have a great time.
