I love good wines and champagnes but don’t have a wine cellar. What is the best way to store them?
I have a small space in my basement (8 x 10) - should I build something with several shelves or will a few of those small fridge type storage units be sufficient? I have approximately 60 bottles.

As long as your basement doesn’t experience volatile temperature changes, storing bottles of wine in a basement is a great way to keep your wine. This is especially true for bottles of red, which don’t really need to be served cold.
I have 20-30 bottles of wine in my house at any given time. I usually stack the bottles of red and white on a metal wine rack (laying the bottles on their sides) and keep the bottles of champagne in a small wine refrigerator.
The wine fridges are great, but affordable ones are small and usually can only store a couple of bottles at a time.
If I were you, I would recommend either purchasing or building a wine rack with shelves for your wine collection, but keep your champagne in a fridge somewhere.
Happy wining!
If your basement space stays at an even temperature it will probably be fine. You would only need to chill it to serve it. If your basement has temperature variations, you may want to look into insulation to regulate the temperature.
This probably would be too small & you would need 10 to more of these. Unless to have someone to build you one and then it would have to be temp. & climate controlled. Would also be $$$$$$$.

Hope this helps.
Keep them horizontal. I think the shelves are fine. Up to you though.
Don’t purchase anything you don’t intend to consume in the very near future
Buy a wine rack with the number or storage spaces you want/need and place it in a closet you infrequently open. Store the bottles on their sides, and they should stay cool and safe. If your basement maintains an even temperature, you could store them there… but if you don’t want a wine ‘wardrobe’, a closet would do just as well.
