I am wine lover and love to learn about wine all the time. I recently went to Traverse City, MI & visited 4 wineries. Those 4 wineries all had the same wine tastings. I was looking for more of a variety. Is there only certain times of the year that particular varietals are grown? Or does MI just not have the soil to grow, say, a petit syrah??

My guess would be that the soil and growing seasons are conducive to only certain types of grape…one way to tell would be to check out web sites of other Michigan wineries and see what types of selections there are. Also, when wine tasting, always talk to the vintner - ask why he/she makes the wines they choose to make…they love to talk about their wines and will probably tell you everything you need to know - also…if you do the wine thing around where you live, always check with the winery for upcoming harvests (ask if they have started to cask the wine…you can probably get early tastings of the wines before they are ready which is really neat).
