If not a formal tasting fruit is a great accompaniment for wine. Most berries (strawberry) works well. Tart green apples is a classic with wine. Just use an acid to prevent the enzymatic browning of fruit. A diluted lemon juice works great for this. Just dip the apple slices in the lemon juice and cover with clear wrap until needed. Depending on the wine pears, mango, and nuts work well too. For the nuts, the best are walnuts, pecans, and pistachios. Do not roast[ed] in most cases but this too may work in special match ups.
If the event is a formal and thus educational event then crustless bread for non salted water crackers are best.
apples, grapes, pomegranate seeds - maybe peaches….
Gotta be careful with fruit. If you have been to an event before with wine and a fruit and cheese platter, you may have noticed people go for the fruit, drink some wine, and then for a beer.
Americans at least (and I’m American, I’m not stereotyping) will a lot of times tend to go for the fruit because it’s much less fattening. They eat the fruit, which brings out all the bitterness/astringency of the wine. Sweet foods actually make wine taste terrible (most wines anyway).
If you want to avoid this, put fruits on there with a lot of complexity, such as figs (plain or roasted). However, as long as people are also eating the cheeses, this won’t be an issue.
Have what fruit you like but what you really need is pieces of very plain bread or crackers, just in case someone is serious about tasting the wine. That person might appreciate a pitcher of tepid water too. The idea is to have something bland between the wines, so there is no carryover of taste.
The fruit is for the people who don’t know wine and want to concentrate on the cheese.
