mac vs windows vs linux?
my family is updating our computer, we have xp service pack 3, and since microsoft doesnt have any more security updates, we are thinking about xinows vista.
i hate that choice, so i want to go with mac or linux.
i know that linux is mostly a buiseness software, since you would have to run most programs throughe WINE, but mac’s are so expensive. windows vista is already compatible with our compuer, we have a dell, but i dont know if mac or linux will work on here.
whatever help you give is apriciated:)

What’s wrong with Windows Vista? If you’re only qualm is that you’ve heard that "it sucks" then you’re missing out, because it’s actually quite good. It’ll work with all your current software as well and is best for gaming.
Linux is not recommended, especially if you’ve never used Linux before.
Macs suck, in my opinion. They’re horribly overpriced and all your Windows programs won’t work unless you install Windows on the Mac.
I’ve been a network administrator for 12 years. I’ve worked on Windows, Mac, more Linux distros than I can name, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Minuet, ReactOS, BeOS, and more. As far as I have ever been able to tell, the only differences between Mac and Ubuntu Linux are these:
1. Mac has the Dock.
2. If you really want to PAY for commercial software, you can on a Mac, but on Ubuntu, you’re limited to only free software.
I used all free software on my first OSX computer and then wondered why I had payed for a Mac when it wasn’t doing anything that Ubuntu wouldn’t do just as well or better. By better I mean that I had to use that weird IUseThis thingy to keep my Mac software up to date (and it didn’t always work); however, Ubuntu keeps EVERYTHING up to date automatically.
Therefore my conclusion is this: If you’re happy with all free software, then go with Ubuntu. If you want to use commercial software, then go with Windows since it supports more commercial software than Mac anyway.
well if i were on your shoes i would totally go for linux .
and mac is good but like you said man ,its to expensive …..nothing that money can buy but…..what if you dont have the money
lolz .
window vista is the best
It all depends on your intentions.
If you are gamer, stick with XP, seriously, stick with XP, Don’t upgrade to Vista, as it will suck your resources dry, and Leopard and Linux don’t have the kind of gaming support you need. Windows 7 will, so hold off until then.
If you are NOT a gamer, and just want a nice usable machine that can do anything you might need besides high end 3d gaming, Linux is the choice for sure. Linux will have everything you need. Music Movies, Pictures, games, office software, wifi, web, all of it. for free.
Ubuntu is very much the top of the game right now when it comes to Desktop Linux. It is the best supported and best documented flavor available these days. Neither of those things necessarily makes it the "Best" Linux though. If you have NO linux experience (and you don;t need much these days) Ubuntu or probably Kubuntu would be a good place to start. If you Don;t mind a little reading and small learning curve, you might very much like Mepis or PcLinuxOs. all three are excellent desktop Linuxes. I think you will find that you don’t need wine much at all, since most of what you would want to do will have a compatible program ready and waiting.
As for running OSX leopard on your Dell. Well, you can do. I’m doing it on an MSI U100 now. It works… mostly. It is NOT supported. You are not supposed to install OSX on anything other than an Apple, which is STUPID if you ask me, but there it is. There is also not good hardware support for other than Apple internals in OSX.

Microsoft will continue supporting security updates for XP until 2014 according to their site: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3223. The mainstream support ends in April 2009, but that is just for other non-security bug fixes.
If you want to try Linux, you can install Ubuntu on the computer at the same time as XP or Vista if there is enough hard drive space. (search for "dual booting")
If you are planning to buy Vista, make sure your computer will support it by running the Vista upgrade advisor at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx.
I have never used a Mac so I don’t know how well they work, but Apple won’t let you install Mac OS X on a Dell computer.
Windows vista is compatible already with you dell desktop so you need to pay only $ 200 to get the software and vista has lots of new programs
They imac is very nice sleek and thin it has a dock so you can easily open and find your files or other stuff and it pretty fast but there is not that many programs compatible but mac has lots of special effects.
Ok now the linux don’t’ alot about linux but it has special effects and it is free
my choice is that go for the vista beacuse it is a fast computer os and it cheap and lots of programs and games pluse if you like mac you can download mac themes and other stuff so it looks like it beacuse i have a xp and it completely looks like a mac if u want a fast vista buy a new computer
I hop this helps
Dont throw your xp there are still games that only work for xp
