Oenophiles, which winery is your current favourite?
For those of you who enjoy the Dionysian pleasures, I ask you to name your favourite winery of the moment. Which vintner pleases your senses, best compliments your meals, provides the perfect endnote? What types of wines do you prefer?
I am fond of Pontchartrain Vineyards in Louisiana, which produces an exceptionally light and airy red which is a real revelation; and the 2003 iced wine from Three Rivers Winery in Washington is really wonderful. I am also fond of another Washington winery called Red Diamond-exceptionally good pinot noir!

I am hardly a connoisseur of fine wines(don’t have the taste buds or the money), but Oregon has large and growing number of small independent wineries that have won awards. I really like a family owned winery near Dundee called Sokol Blosser( 30 miles southwest of Portland) that puts out some excellent batches of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. There is a string of small wineries in the same area(ideal combination of soil, rainfall and rolling hills) that provide a great setting for guided bus tours where you sample wines from more than a dozen wineries. The bus drives you there and back, but you are on your own when you get back to the parking lot. Washington is similar to Oregon and has many small wineries waiting to be discovered as well. I prefer Pinot Gris. It is a light wine but with a more complex taste(at least to me) than the Chardonnays. I never knew Louisiana had vinyards. Does it produce a Cajun version of Merlot that goes well with crayfish? Good wine can come from almost anywhere. It is just a matter of finding it.
I love Columbia Crest Grand Estates in Washington.
The Chardonnay is my favorite. It is very buttery, which I like and has a mild green apple finish and oaky bouquet. It’s also very consistent, year to year.
I learned something new, I didn’t know Lousiana had wineries!
