Other than grapes, what’s the best fruit to make wine out of?
Some people define wine as firmented grape juice, never anything but grapes… for thoes of you who feel this way, don’t bother answering… Some people think that wine can be made of anything at all (within reason of course)… Mead is any type of wine made with honey, but traditionaly is made with just honey… but one can make a fruit mead…
Reason? Winemaking is one of my hobbies… but I don’t like grapes much… and I’m curious what people like…
I’d immagine a spiced cranberry mead would be amazing for thanksgiving…
comments, suggestions, ideas, recipes, and whatever else you’d like to submit.
Other Notes: I’m allergec to strawberry and refuse to use metabisulphate.
Wine CAN be made of virtualy anything… theoreticaly, you could make wine from lawn clippings, I doubt you’d want to drink it, but it could be done… I mostly want suggestions and ideas.

Wine can be made from Cranberry, apples, peaches, logenberry, dandilions, cherries, raspberry, strawberry, pretty much any fruit can be used.
Peaches, that sounds like a neat flavor for an evening sip kinda drink.
in romania they make alcoholic drinks out of plums, apples.. they are not true wine but still.. there is one made out of sour cherries.. if intrested i can get the recipies.. contact me.. melodyrose27@yhaoo.com
Ive tried some wonderful cranberry, blackberry, mulberry, strawberry, and apple wines. A combination of different flavors like cranberry and apple also proves to be very good.
Watermelon, peaches, apricots.
The reason that grapes are the best thing to make wine from is that they are complete in themselves. The skin contains yeast, just put them in a container and they’ll ferment and make wine.
Other fruits need water added, sometimes sugar.
In the EU the legal definition of wine is that it is made from grapes, and it is a definition that I agree with.
However, what we call ‘country wines’, i.e. non grape alcoholic beverages are a tradition and gooseberries and elderberries both can be used to make an drinkable wine.
Go check out the book _Making Wild Wines & Meads_ — it has lots of recipies for unusual wines using herbs, fruits, flowers, etc.
My personal favorite (though not in the book) is açaí, a brazillian palm berry.
