After years of constant formats, and losing valuable work and information, I have completely had it with Microsofts pathetic software. I of course plan to one day upgrade my recording studio to Mac computers, however thats not an option at the current time due to this depression were in. Most of my studio software is Windows software and I would love to keep using it due largely to the fact that ive spent lots of money on it and also because i’m so familiar with using it. I dont have a lot of time to learn any new software because I have paying clients. I am familiar with Ubuntu and using Wine but I could never get any of my software to work with Wine, its very limited with software it supports. Another OS ive seen is Ubuntustudio, but im unfamiliar with how it works. Anyone have any suggestions???

I have a laptop with 250GB of hard drive space. 190GB of it is devoted to Windows 7 64-Bit, 30 to the Ubuntu Linux 64-Bit’s file system, 2 to the Linux’s Swap space, and the rest to the restore partition. I am keeping the Windows partition in existence and so large solely because of developer needs (not to be biased, but there is obviously more moneymaking potential in Windows software than in Linux software at this point in time). If I were to choose to develop Windows programs another way, like a virtual machine (Virtual Box), an emulator (Wine), or just on a different computer, and were to delete the Windows partition (after backing up files, of course), than could I resize the Linux partition to it’s full potential without having to install it all over again? Would it cause any internal errors and/or slow boot/load/operation time down? I want to know because if it would, and I would have to reinstall afterwards, I don’t want to do too much on the Ubuntu partition yet because I would loose all of it after the reinstall anyway. Also, would the answer apply to ALL Linux distributions, too? This is just for future reference (I usually use Fedora, just decided to go with Ubuntu this time).

I’m aware of things like the Sonuus converter which track your guitars sound to then convert it to MIDI, although I’m not sure if this will work for electric acoustic. I’d rather not go out and spend a ton on complex audio equipment however, so I’m also wondering if there was some sort of software I could install on my computer to allow it to act as a guitar to MIDI converter. I have a Macbook Pro with OS X 10.6 and wine ports installed to allow for windows software as needed. I also have Logic Pro installed.

hello, my windows computer has just died, "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" and i have no windows xp disc, so that computer is screwed, now.
i am looking in buying a MAC. however i need to know a few things:
1) is there an equivalent software to microsoft office? and can they open files like .ppt, .pub and .doc?
2) can a MAC run windows software? (specificly Finale PrintMusic and Olympus Master2) or do i need to use a windows emulator, like i do in linux’s "wine" program?
3) which is the best MAC to get? Macbook? MAC MINI? i just need a nice home computer.
4) will i be able to retrieve my itunes shopping account?
5) is there equivalent softwares of Windows Live Messenger, GIMP, Windows Movie Maker and Realplayer?
6) Is the command prompt easy to access and are the commands similar to linux or windows?
7) Will EPSON Printing and scanning software work?
8) How easy / hard is it to install new programs and what is the method?
9) lastly, whats the price range for a good, but not amazingly fancy MAC? ( £ )
thankyou, i know theres alot of questions.
thankyou for the answers so far. but just to clarify a £ is GBP, British Pounds and pennies.etc

I recently installed Linux Mint 9, I’m quite happy with it but I’m just an average computer user so some things seem way too complicated for me. Wine installs windows software but they don’t run on there, I tried Windows Live Messenger and Sopcast but neither would work so is there a version of Linux which is more user friendly for novices? I know open source softwares are available but I don’t know how to install most of them as I’m not a techno wizard. Thanks in advance.

All this started when I installed the ATI radeon graphic card driver. After installing the driver,I was asked to reboot.
While booting, the Kubuntu loading screen came up as usual but after that the screen went black!!
It dosen’t even show a cursor to write some commands…..its just….Black :-(
It tried the "recovery mode" option. It performed some tests and then showed me the command line but i dont know what to type in their……..
I guess its due to the driver…….
Is their any way(I know there is…and you genius Linux users are very good at it)to uninstall the driver through the recovery mode command line?
Thanx .

I’ve just purchased a HP 2133 Mini-note netbook and it was a bargain price, however, this is partially because it has Suse linux on it as opossed to Windows XP or Vista.

My question is, how difficult is Suse linux to use for a person with no knowledge of Linux what so ever? All I want it for it using the internet, taking notes and maybe watching a film. Do you think it’ll all come ready to go, or will it be quite complicated to set up things like the wifi on Linux?

Also, I would like to run Microsoft Office on it, and I understand that through softwear called "Wine", it is possible to run Office and other Windows software. How complex is this to set up and would it be fairly straightforward for a person without knowledge of Linux?

Thanks
