Cloose a wine that you enjoy drinking
Remember, never cook with anything that you wouldn’t drink.
Recipes typically require a drier wine, so I’d recommend any Fume Blanc or Sauv Blanc that they can find that’s palatable. Even an unoaked Chardonnay would be fine.

I can recommend great cheap wines for cooking, but the best cheap wines don’t tend to be from California.
Your customers should be told to look for heartier reds and lighter whites. Steer them clear of the heavily-oaked chardonnays, pinot noir and valpolicello, and towards the cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio and champagne.
For white: a New Zealand sauvignon blanc, probably Nobilo. It’s a pleasure to finish the bottle once you’ve used a cup in your recipe.
For reds, I can do California — Bonny Doon’s Big House Red should be under $10 and readily available. (Personally I’d choose to cook with Brokenwood’s Cricket Pitch red, an Aussie blend that is closer to $15.)
Truth be told, though, if you only want to cook with it, Sutter Home works just fine. So does Tott’s sparkling wine. And they’re both well under $10.

I also work in a wine shop. I tell my clients to always use wines that they enjoy drinking for cooking. If it’s reasonable to consider whatever wine is to be served with the meal is perfect for cooking.
