What are good gifts for a foreign family?
My English family would like to give something to a French family. Usually when we get gifts, it’s wine, chocolate, or a delicacy from the area. So in England, we can’t really give them wine or chocolate, because we don’t really make them specially.
Any ideas?

It’s definitely the thought that counts but you are correct in thinking that Wine and Chocolate are not the best choices. Try something English. Maybe some good scones or tea that is from your area. Otherwise, maybe a sports TShirt from your home town or something that they can keep and remember you by. In France you can get almost everything you want. You don’t have to impress anyone with your gift so try to make it a fun gift that they won’t see anywhere else.
English are known for there Roses and the french are known for there love of perfume so send them something a long that line and to add a special touch write a well known English greeting or poem or quote but translate it into french for them. They will love the extra effort you put in

Consider something that’s made in Great Britain that’s less available in France. Perhaps something that’s woven or some fine English porcelain. Skip wine or chocolate or other food items. The British are not really known for these. Let your choice beinfluenced by what the family might like, but it should absolutely be English made.

Obviously a lot is going to depend on your budget, but I wouldn’t abandon the idea of giving them some sort of food item - particularly since they tend to buy you wine or chocolate.
English port is exceptional and there are some excellent varieties that are rather unusual - for example, white port. Ask a wine merchant. And along similar lines, you could give them a portion of a very good Stilton or other cheese. It’s a little-known fact that Britain has more varieties of cheese than France!
Gosh, I am getting hungry already. Port and Stilton anyone?
