There are many great moderate priced wines in the market. Our recommendation is to stay away from mass merchandised wines or commoditized wines in the market.

Examples of commodity wines are Yellow Tail, Kendall Jackson, Beringers, Mondavi Select, BV Coastal, etc.

We always consider hidden gems to use for our gift baskets and gifts in general. Salentein, El Portillo, Tohu, Kim Crawford are a few that I’d recommend.

Go to the liquor store and you’ll notice some wines will have reviews posted next to them. Each review has a rating, which is technically 1-100, but is actually more like 85-100. 85 is cheap, 95 is expensive. 98 is fantastic.

Get whatever the cheapest 92 is on sale. Pinot noir is a good kind of wine. Don’t get merlot because if you do, the wine snobs will make fun of you.

Few ideas:

Go for a Malbec from Argentina. They are approachable, affordable and delicious!

Merlot gets a bad rap, but most oenophiles and connoisseurs know that some of the best wines are made from Merlot. Chateau Petrus (at least $1,000 a bottle), Chateau Cheval Blanc (the one Merlot Miles in sideways didn’t knock) and Pommerol (Bordeaux) produces great ones too, though they might be a bit pricier. If you can spend about 30 or so on everyone a Melot from Pommerol would be an incredible treat!

‘Whoop Whoop’ It’s a great Australian wine. Shiraz if I’m not mistaken. You can get it at Beverages and More for about $10-$12. Not as tanic as some other fuller bodied reds. Very drinkable. 2 girlfiends of mine who will only drink white wine love this red.

All of YellowTail’s wines are very affordable and surprizingly good for the price. $ 9 to $ 15

But there are hundreds in the below $20 range. Just buy something that looks interesting. I am no fan of California, but they seem to make great wines at an excellent price.
