What is the best kind of red wine to give as a gift?
The gift is for my boyfriends parents. They are taking us all on a cruise and they are paying for me and as one of my gestures I thought I would get them red wine because they love it.

I am going to second Tony’s very good suggestion. My only thought was a good Cab. but he has a good point with the young Vs the old (experienced) wine drinker.

Boone’s Farm.
Depends on the person. If a younger drinker new to wine perhaps a nice red zinfandel or a merlot. Some pinot noirs are good too. For someone more experienced, ask at the wine shop - but a big cabernet is great, or a spicy shiraz.
Merlot….any of the following brands in a 2005 or 2006 are easy to find, reasonably priced and delicious:
Kendall Jackson
Yellow Tail
Beringer
Mondavi
Sutter Home
I would say either merlot or chardonnay
I say it depends on the recipient and the occasion.
If you are trying to impress the recipient then you don’t want to insult them if they know a lot about wine. I would steer clear of brands like Beringer, Kendall Jackson, Yellowtail….basically grocery store wines that retail for less than $10.00.
If it is just a nice gesture because you have to bring something to someone because you were invited to dinner, but the person isn’t a wine expert, then one of those grocery store wines will suffice.
If you are not sure what the person drinks, I would opt for Willamette Valley Vineyards Pinot Noir or Mark West Pinot Noir.
If they like full bodied red wines, then you cannot go wrong with Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon or pretty much any wine from Montes Vineyards. Their wines continually receive awards and great ratings from all of the major wine publications.
If they prefer something middle of the road, I would go for a nice merlot, something like Napa Cellars Merlot or Whitehall Lane Merlot.
I always say you can’t go wrong with a shiraz! Although, Pinot Noir is a great choice as well - 2005 was a great year (weather-wise) for these grapes so it gives you a large selection to choose from… I always say that you can’t go wrong with a 2005 Pinot. Although, what do I know, I’m drunk…lol
