Why does everyone like California wines?
I’m just kind of curious why everyone seems to like California wines, most everyone I have had has been detestable… so is it that I’m missing a particularly good vineyard or do all CA wines taste very acidic? I’m open to varietals and vineyards to try… it would make finding wines a bit easier since even here in VA one of the top wine producing states most stores only stock CA wines.

For those who haven’t heard of Virginia wines, here’s a couple of my favorite vineyards, Williamsburg Winery (they’ve won some awards) and Wynham Winery. Check out this site too http://www.virginiawines.org/

Yuck. Cant think of a any good Californian wines. Cant beat french, australian and chilean
They don’t.
I tend to find most of them not dry enough, they also tend to be over oaked
GRAPES ARE THE BEST
I believe it is the quality of the grapes. From what I understand though California wines are even superior to the French or any other wines in the entire world. This has been proven through wine tasting events and contests. I have also heard the east coast wines are also not liked or appreciated in Europe but the California wines are prized there.
That is awesome…I totally agree. I have said this for years and people think I am being a "wine snob". No they just don’t have great flavor, they are watery bland and acidic on the back-end.
It is all personal preference. Here in St. Louis, lots of people like local wines. I think they suck! I drink primarily top end California and Oregon reds (Pinots, Cabs, Merlots, and blends). Many are very similar to the best French bordeaux wines.
I’ve never had a VA wine, so I can’t comment on them.
I work in a place that has over 500 bottles of wine and I’ve never seen or heard of wine from Virginia. Maybe they need an ad campaign. Or perhaps your palette needs educating.
And no, all California wines are not acidic. Wrap your lips around some Dalle Valle or Shafer "Hillside Select"… you’ll get it.
Have you tried any wines from WA st. there are a lot of great award winning wineries. Like Bookwalter, Chateau St. Michelle, Hedges.. and so on
no not me
I dont. I find Californian wines really harsh and not easy to drink. However Joseph Phelps, Merlot, 1996 was really good. Other than that they are hopeless.
