Wine is important to a few people .Especially the wine growers and bottlers.
Most people just drink wines they like.AND what they can afford.Wine in a supermarket is bought to drink at home whilst a restaurant has to sell dearer to make a profit to pay staff and overheads.
Vintage wine is often in short supply hence the high price paid by connesuers
Some eating places put a lot of effort into getting a name for selling fine wines.
Beer is also taken seriously as is tea and coffee.
Brandy and Whisky also have followers.
