Wine country tours… bus tour or just drive ourselves?
We are going to San Francisco in October and want to go to wine country. Are the bus tours worth the money? or should we just drive ourselves? Are Napa and Yountsville a good sampling? Thanks!

Bus tour. You won’t have to worry about drinking and driving so everyone can enjoy themselves. Some of the wineries are in out of the way psots and can take a while ot get there. what’s more fun than sitting in A/C confort relaxing while somebody else does the driving?!
I’m partial to Monterey County wines myself.. but I am predjudiced, as I live there.
The Wine train is nice too - Napa Valley Wine Train
The bus tours are fine, I usually drive there with someone, but I live in SF so it’s easier. With the bus you don’t have to worry about drinking and driving, and who wants to go to wine country and not have any wine.
The drive is nice though, if someone will be a designated driver.
I agree with the first answer… get the BUS!!!!!!! You will all be glad you did after you finish the trip. In fact try to get a nice group of friends to come with you and split the cost. Have fun.
Hi,
I prefer driving myself even as you will have the chance to see some wineries you pick.
To do this, though limit yourself to maximum 4 wineries, more tasting is anyway not possible (unless your aim was to get drunk rather then to taste).
My first stop takes me usually to a good deli to get some food to go and have a nice picknick at one of the wineries who allow it at the premisses (e.g. Gloria Ferrer Champain Cellars, you have great views from there over the Carneros district).
Here are some suggestions for wineries in Napa Valley to visit:
Clos DuVal; great red wines
Joseph Phelps; great white wines, requires tour reservation, but then you get the best tour in Napa and great wines
Spring Mountain Winerie; you might recognize the house and surroundings from an 80th TV serie
Charles Krug; one of the oldest wineries and also has a great tour
Sattui; has a nice deli and accross the street there is a port place, but I forgot the name
Don’t forget, you should be just sipping and tasting, so if you do 4 wineries during one day and eat well (cheese, salami, bread etc) then you should not get into any trouble.
Enjoy the day
