Wine lovers: What is a great wine with a great cheese combo?
Help! My friends are putting on a Best-cheese-and-wine-combo contest and I want to win, dang it! We’re not wine experts but this will be fun. Please give me some recommendations.

That sounds like a great idea. And once you’ve tasted the planned pairings, you’ll get a chance to mix and match and learn what works and what is really awful together. I’ll bet you the biggest surprise of the night is that, in general, white wines are much better than reds with cheese.
On the perfect side…
Stilton with Vintage Port or Tawny Port (Vintage is very expensive, Tawny should be affordable, a basic Ruby Port won’t be bad, but not the mind-blowing pairing of Vintage or Tawny)
Brie with Champagne (yum)
Chevre with Sancerre (you’d probably need to hit a wine store for a Sancerre, but it will be worth it!)
a good Merlot and aged Gouda
